City of Fire

City of Fire

(word of warning: caps and puncs are always optional for me, hope it doesnt stop you from reading)

This painting, like most of my “work” is accidental. My talent for thinking of something and then painting or drawing it is limited. Most of my creative work that involves forethought is poetry, with an occasional story thrown in.

With most of my artwork, though I feel a little guilty and vain for even calling it that, I paint and then look and see what I painted.

In this case, as is almost always the case with my watercolors, I was paintings the staircase and or the tree while Christopher, my 8 yr old, was painting whales and sharks and whatever he desired. (I have found, after nearly 30 yrs of parenting {more on the nearly 30 yrs in another future posting} that my best “quality time” as a parent, is when we are doing something,, not just directly “visiting”)

…. I am going to need an editor…..

When I finished what I was doing, Christopher had this piece of paper left over where he had made the letter “H” and a few other marks (the H is faintly visible in the top half of the painting). I asked him if he wanted to save it. He save about 1/3 of his paintings and drawing, i save all of mine. Ego? Desperation? not sure. he did not, so i painted over it. When I finished, I could see a city skyline, and i remembered that when i used to spend a good amount of time around campfires, bonfires and burning trash piles I was struck by how the flames often resembled a city skyline.

Hope you like the painting, hope you can stand the ramble. Its all my wife, Suzanne’s fault. She said if i am gonna type a million words a year, not really an exaggeration, i ought to make some of it a blog. So this is my humble beginning. click thru takes you to my other art work.
