A Hymn, Yes a Hymn I Just Wrote

No, i didnt just find religion, or even god, but I am thinking about writing a story, and wanted an authentic, but original hymn to draw from ala Clyde Edgerton’s “Walking Across Egypt” (a great book, by the way).

Besides Clyde’s book, I was obviously inspired by Rev Lowery’s beautiful hymn Hanson Place, or better known as Shall We Gather by the River.

I am posting it, not only for my blog followers entertainment, but to get feedback from anyone involved in sacred music and/or theology as to the legitimacy of the wording, structure and message. Of course, as I dont write rhyming poetry, my lyrics are not heavy on rhyme, but other than that?

Shall We Tarry On this Lonesome Shore

Shall we tarry any longer
On this lonesome shore?
While there are places where
The masses mingle in celebration
Of this summer of a life

But we must know the tinkling sounds
Will fade with the hair and eyes
Into feeble grays
But there is a place
Just across the river

Where the golden sun
They say will never set
And the feast will last forever
So why do you tarry my brother
Let us leave this lonely place

In glory we will enter
After but a moment of darkness
And we will marvel we tarried
So long and so fearful to go
Shall we tarry any longer
On this lonesome shore?
